Historic Sun Life Building

Where I spent my summer working in the heart of downtown Montreal.

The Sun Life Vault

Fun fact: During WWII, the British Crown Jewels were secretly hidden in an underground vault!

My Challenge

Analysts relied on a large number of training files, process documents, and code resources spread across different locations. My role was to help centralize this information, improve visibility across workflows, and make it easier for analysts to find what they needed quickly.

My Role

01 — Centralized Resources

Organized training materials, code, and frequently used analyst resources into a centralized SharePoint environment.

02 — Mapped Analyst Workflows

Met individually with analysts across the team to review and update the inventory of processes used in day-to-day work.

03 — Built a Controlled AI Agent

Developed an internal Copilot agent with constraints directing it to answer questions using only approved internal files and resources.

04 — Improved Knowledge Access

Created a more direct way for analysts to navigate documentation without manually searching through large numbers of PDFs and folders.

Responsible AI Integration

Because the tool was intended for a risk-management environment, the emphasis was not simply on generating answers, but on controlling where those answers came from. The agent was designed to rely on approved internal sources, helping analysts access existing knowledge more efficiently while keeping the system grounded in trusted documentation.

Impact

Centralized Knowledge
Brought training materials, process documentation, and code resources into a more structured system.

Faster Navigation
Reduced the need to manually search through extensive internal documentation.

AI Adoption
Helped introduce a practical use case for generative AI within an established financial risk environment.

Confidentiality Note

Key Takeaways

This internship taught me how to contribute within a larger, more structured organization while working closely with people across different roles and areas of expertise. I learned how important teamwork, communication, and understanding existing workflows are before trying to improve them. It also reinforced something I really value about engineering: the problem-solving mindset is highly transferable and can be applied well beyond traditional engineering contexts—from technical design to finance, process improvement, and AI.
